The Suffolk County Psychological Association is proud to announce its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee.

Mission Statement

To honor the lived experience of disempowered and marginalized communities and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion through:

  1. Disseminating information and collaborating with community partners devoted to civil rights advocacy
  2. Endorsing changes in public policy that are consistent with DEI values
  3. Expanding models of the self and treatment that bring in traditional and non-traditional healing modalities
  4. Promoting a better understanding of the intersectionality between psychology and social justice through exploring paradigms of power, privilege, colonization, and oppression
  5. Creating a safe, inclusive space for mental health professionals and community members to explore their own identities and implicit biases
  6. Balancing general narrative with individual narrative to assist in improving psychotherapy process and outcome

UPDATED FEBRUARY 12, 2025

The political landscape, including executive orders, over the past weeks has had and will continue to have immeasurable impacts on our society, including historically disenfranchised communities (such as immigrants and LGBTQIA+ individuals), veterans, civil servants, the people we work with, those we love, and us as clinicians. SCPA’s position is one that enables all people, of all identities, to live free and fulfilled lives. It is important not to lose sight of our duty as clinicians to be aware of these issues and provide care with sensitivity, humility, and within the ethical principles of our profession. We are here to defend science, psychology as a field, and most importantly humanity, so that our clients, coworkers, and communities live not in fear of authentic expression. As a DEI committee, we remain committed to keeping you updated on best practices and ways to be engaged and have agency. Stay tuned to a DEI email with additional resources.
